7 Mistakes Made by Fired Contestants on The Apprentice Life as a contestant on the Apprentice isnt an easy ride. Theyre given tasks that will push them to  their limits and Lord Sugar sticks firmly to his no nonsense attitude, meaning individuals  have to  step up their game  and avoid slipping up at all costs to impress him. Though a lot of the scenarios that the contestants find themselves in on the show are a far fetch from real life, a lot of the skills and business knowledge  they have to demonstrate are highly transferrable to real life. Unfortunately, not everyone can land the job as Alan Sugars business partner, so each week we wave goodbye to one of the contestants as Lord Sugar tells them Youre fired! So where did these contestants go wrong  and what can we learn from their mistakes? 1) Dont  underestimate your customers intelligence Your customers arent stupid, so  it is unlikely that they are  going to fork out 10 times the value of your product on sale. Sarah in season 10 learnt this the hard way, when she tried to flog a bucket of sponges for a whopping £250The only way she was going to get anywhere near the asking price is if she managed to convince the customers the sponges grow legs and do your cleaning for you, and even then I think she may have been pushing her luck! 2) Dont waste peoples time Having since made a career for herself for making obscene comments and becoming Britains most hated woman, it had probably skipped a lot  of our minds that Katie Hopkins first entered the lime light in Series 3 of the Apprentice. She even managed to hold her position in the competition right up until the Final of the show, just to quit at the last minute.  Alan Sugar is probably breathing a huge sigh of relief about it today, however at the time her departure was perceived as  a huge waste of his time and she came across as highly ungrateful about the opportunity being offered. 3) Dont come on too strong Youre not going to sell your product by scaring your customers or forcing your sales pitch down their throat! Take note Jason from season 9, pouncing on unsuspecting passers by is not the most effective sales technique. 4) Dont be offensive Though political correctness may be taken overboard at time, youre not going to sell any products by offending your customers! On more than one occasion, teams have demonstrated pretty poor judgement when faced with the task of creating a TV ad. Im sure that Fat Daddys Fitness Hell from season 10 will really be a best seller! And dont even get me started on the sexist Octi-Clean ad in series 6!   5) Dont let your ego take over Over the years there have been some huge personalities on the show with even bigger egos. Remember Steven from season 10? Sure, a level of confidence can be advantageous in business, as assertion and self-assurance is sometimes required to win customers over; however there is a fine line between confident and arrogant and arrogance can be incredibly off-putting. People are more likely to buy from individuals who are likeable and humble, than someone who rates themselves a bit too highly. 6) Know your market Trying to sell fish-fingers to a vegan cafe owner was never going to work out for Mergim in Series 11! Do your research and identify who your target market are before making your approach. In fact, its probably best  for you to determine whether your target market actually exists before proceeding with your business venture in the first place, but hey the contestants had the shift these fish fingers quick! 7) Dont  bite off more than you can chew Be realistic about what you can offer customers, as to make a promise that you cannot fulfill will  reflect badly on you if you fail to meet their expectations. If something is beyond your capabilities, be honest and try to come to another arrangement. Unfortunately Shibby from Series 6 didnt think it through when he took an order for 1,900 bread rolls, only to produce 16 on the day. His answer: Tell your guests to go on the Atkins diet.

And it is even more challenging to understand whether you really need it and whether you are ready for this step both morally and financially.   Theres much to consider when preparing for divorce.   Lets try to figure it out. Are You Ready to Take Charge? It is not about a situation when a man wants a divorce, or when it comes to escaping from marriage, where violence and abuse occurs. Lets discuss a less complicated but still unpleasant scenario when it seems like nothing awful happens, but, anyway, you are pondering on a divorce. More often, women worry about the same things: Probably, it’s time to call it quits. But some days it seems to me that everything can get better. And the next day it feels like it is necessary to break up and separate immediately. Maybe I still love him? Or maybe not, but I am still worried. And what about my dream of growing old together? How will the children take it? And then, how to explain this to all friends and relatives? I definitely do not want to explain anything. So maybe we should not divorce? But I have been already thinking about this for three years. But everything could be fine if he changed his behavior. Is he capable? Or not? Or just do not want to change? What if its me wrong? However, you have to think over in advance what will help you, how you plan to deal with it, where to look for support. If you just rely on “as luck would get it” there, you may not cope. The same applies to practical issues. If you depend on your husband financially (an apartment or house is his sole property, or something else makes you not self-sufficient), think in advance, how will you deal with these issues yourself. Will you be able to maintain the habitual standard of living? Whether it is fundamentally important to you? What can you do to change your situation and improve your abilities, earning capacity, and so on? Do you know what to do to prepare for the divorce process? If you are going to initiate a divorce, it is better to sort out all the procedure questions and possible divorce options independently and thus, to take the primary responsibility. The moment when you tell your spouse you want to divorce is not the best time to rely on him or wait for support. If you spend your days fantasizing about getting into a new career that fills you with more meaning and purpose, then its time to take action.   Ive successfully reinvented my own career four (4) times and I fully believethat life is way too short to stay in a meaningless job where you’re unfulfilled, unchallenged and under-valued. As a leading career coach, the #1 biggest question I get asked is, How can I transition into a new career without decreasing my salary? Each time I reinvented my own career, I received anywhere between an 8% 32% salary increase. A client of mine, Matt, just reinvented his career from being a manager in the TV industry to becoming a manager in high tech, and received a 17-percent pay increase. So how did we do it?   And how can YOU do it? Moving into a new career means repackaging your skills, qualifications and successes so that you can transition into a new job role, company or industry. It takes a strong vision, a solid plan, and someone who can coach you through your transition, but yes, it is possible! Below are four steps I take with my clients to teach them how to reinvent their career Identify your transferable skills. If youve been working for at least five years, then you have transferable skills. These are skills that transition from industry to industry, or from job role to job role. Examples include: managing projects, teams, clients or budgets, as well as negotiating contracts, helping a company generate revenue, save money, or gain market share. Other transferable skills include personal characteristics such as demonstrating leadership, mentoring or training others, risk taking, being goal driven, results oriented, a problem solver, or having the ability to influence senior managers. These are great skills to have, and they transfer from industry to industry. All kinds of industries and companies value employees with these types of skills and characteristics. Match your transferable skills to job roles. Read job descriptions posted on Indeed.com, CareerJournal.com, CareerBuilder.com and Monster.com, as well as business journals and industry-specific websites. If you want to work for a specific company then check out their website’s on-line job postings. Learn the skills and qualifications required for various job roles. Then, match your transferable skills to those jobs you want to go after. If there’s a gap between the required skills and the skills that you currently have, then look for ways to gain that experience such as taking on an extended assignment in your current job, or if you’re in between jobs then try freelancing, consulting, or volunteering. Also, attend industry conferences, trade shows, business networking events and association meetings. Talk to people who work in the industry to learn about their career path, key skills, and advice on how to break into the business. Blow up your resume. The first thing I always did before I transitioned into a new career was blow up my resume. Trying to piece together a resume that highlighted the skills I used to get my last job with the skills I needed to land my next job was like trying to weld together Lexus parts on a BMW. It doesn’t work. You need a brand new resume. Hiring managers don’t care about every job you’ve ever had. They just want to know if  you can do their job? In order to get noticed youll need a clean, polished and professionally written resume. And one more tip attitude is king! I’ve found that getting a new job really boils down to two things: confidence and passion. I’ve never walked into an interview having met all of the job requirements. In fact, for the television interview, I lacked the two biggest requirements which were a minimum of two years experience in television, and a reel to show my TV work. There’s a kind of quiet confidence that we all have down deep inside.
